"Not a year in life, but a life in a year"
What is Rotary Youth Exchange?
Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) is a prestigious international program where young students travel to another country and live with 2-3 carefully selected host families for 9-12 months, attending local schools and experiencing a new culture firsthand.
It is very structured and one of the safest programs in the world for young people. More than 9,000 students around the globe participate every year, making it one of the most trusted youth exchange programs.
Our Rotary International District 3206 sends and receives around 15 students every year and ranks #2 in India in terms of number of Rotary Youth Exchange Students (RYES).
Multi-Level Monitoring
RYES are monitored by Rotary officers at International, Country, Zone, District, Regional, and Club levels, ensuring utmost safety and purpose.
Structured Training
Comprehensive orientation programs are organized for outbound and inbound students and host families by professional trainers before departure.
Open to All
Non-Rotarians can participate! Students must be sponsored by a Rotary Club (without financial commitments from the club).
Dietary Accommodations
Even students from strict vegetarian families have successfully participated, and foreign students are comfortably hosted by vegetarian families in India.
Is This Exchange Right for Me?
Exchanges are open to motivated young people who are ready to embrace new cultures and experiences
Age Requirements
Students must be between 15 years and 17 years 6 months old at the time of application. Some districts in some countries allow exceptions up to 6 months over 19 years, solely subject to their discretion.
Leadership Potential
Have demonstrated leadership qualities in your school and community through activities, clubs, volunteer work, or other meaningful involvement.
Flexible & Adaptable
Are willing to try new experiences including different places, food, culture, school systems, and social environments with an open mind.
Culturally Open
Are genuinely open to cultural differences and ready to embrace new perspectives, traditions, and ways of living with respect and curiosity.
Cultural Ambassador
Can serve as an ambassador for your own country, sharing your culture, values, and traditions while learning about others.
๐ Academic Year Considerations
In India, it is ideal for students to participate after completing their 10th standard. Some students go after completing 11th or 12th standard, provided the student will not be over 19 years when they complete the program.
Important Note: Some schools in India permit students to progress directly to 12th standard after returning, without studying 11th standard โ this is subject to the school's discretion. However, this is purely between the parents and the school. Rotary will not take any responsibility or be involved in this matter.
- Most Indian students depart after 10th standard completion
- Exchange year typically runs from July/August to May/June
- Students return in time for next academic year reopening
- School cooperation and academic planning are essential
