Transform Your Life Through
Cultural Exchange

Rotary Youth Exchange is one of the world's safest and most structured international exchange programs, connecting over 9,000 students annually across the globe. Discover how this life-changing experience can shape your future.

"Not a year in life, but a life in a year"

What is Rotary Youth Exchange?

Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) is a prestigious international program where young students travel to another country and live with 2-3 carefully selected host families for 9-12 months, attending local schools and experiencing a new culture firsthand.

It is very structured and one of the safest programs in the world for young people. More than 9,000 students around the globe participate every year, making it one of the most trusted youth exchange programs.

Our Rotary International District 3206 sends and receives around 15 students every year and ranks #2 in India in terms of number of Rotary Youth Exchange Students (RYES).

๐Ÿค

Age Requirements

15 - 17ยฝ years

Students must be between 15 years and 17 years 6 months old at the time of application. Some districts in some countries allow exceptions up to 6 months over 19 years, solely subject to their discretion.

๐Ÿ†

Leadership Potential

Have demonstrated leadership qualities in your school and community through activities, clubs, volunteer work, or other meaningful involvement.

๐ŸŒŸ

Are willing to try new experiences including different places, food, culture, school systems, and social environments with an open mind.

๐Ÿค

Culturally Open

Are genuinely open to cultural differences and ready to embrace new perspectives, traditions, and ways of living with respect and curiosity.

๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿ“š Academic Year Considerations

In India, it is ideal for students to participate after completing their 10th standard. Some students go after completing 11th or 12th standard, provided the student will not be over 19 years when they complete the program.

Important Note: Some schools in India permit students to progress directly to 12th standard after returning, without studying 11th standard โ€” this is subject to the school's discretion. However, this is purely between the parents and the school. Rotary will not take any responsibility or be involved in this matter.

  • Most Indian students depart after 10th standard completion
  • Exchange year typically runs from July/August to May/June
  • Students return in time for next academic year reopening
  • School cooperation and academic planning are essential

For Parents

Your Role as a Host Parent

As an Indian host parent, you play a vital role in providing a safe, welcoming home for an international student while your child experiences the world

Daily Care & Support

๐ŸŒ Expanding Opportunities

We have been successfully exchanging students with Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Czechia/Slovakia, France, Germany, and the USA. We also have requests from Mexico and Venezuela.

Your choice matters! We can try to arrange exchange with any other country of your preference, subject to the interest of the Rotary district in that country to partner with our district RID3206.

  • Country selection is based on student ranking in the interview (January 2026)
  • Applications are reviewed for compatibility with available destinations
  • Final placement considers student preferences, language skills, and host district availability

When Will You Travel?

Indian students typically leave in the last week of July or August every year and return in the last week of May the following year, ensuring you're back in time for the reopening of school for the next academic year. Foreign students move in and out at approximately the same time.

๐Ÿ“‹ Important Timeline Note

The process of selection, orientation, exchange of documents with partnering districts, ticketing, and visa can be lengthy. This is why we invite applications 6-12 months before students plan to leave.

Already, we have a few interested students from Coimbatore and Kerala. If more students come forward, we can approach more districts outside India and invite more inbound students to match the number of outbound students from our district. This process takes a long time and must be completed by end of January.
